So you’ve heard us say, “We need two books for the legal deposit” and you’ve looked at us like a deer in the headlights. I’ll explain what that means.
Library and Archives Canada collects and preserves Canada’s documentary heritage and makes it accessible to all Canadians. The Legal Deposit is how LAC does this. Providing a publication to the Legal Deposit ensures its preservation for present and future generations.
- Two copies of all publication must be deposited when 100 or more copies are produced. This includes all formats of each item published.
- One copy of each format must be deposited when 4 to 99 copies are produced.
- One copy of each format of online or internet publications must be deposited.
The Legal Deposit DOES NOT prove copyright. Its purpose is to collect and preserve Canadian history. Yes, even if you’re not a Canadian, if our ISBN is used in the creation of the book, we send the appropriate number of books into the Legal deposit.
