So you’ve heard us say, “We need two books for the legal deposit” and you’ve looked at us like a deer in the headlights. In this post I’ll explain what that means.
Library and Archives Canada collects and preserves Canada’s documentary heritage and makes it accessible to all Canadians. The Legal Deposit is how LAC does this. Providing a publication to the Legal Deposit ensures its preservation for present and future generations.
- Two copies of all publication must be deposited when 100 or more copies are produced. This includes all formats of each item published.
- One copy of each format must be deposited when 4 to 99 copies are produced.
- One copy of each format of online or internet publications must be deposited.
If our ISBN is used in the creation of the book, we send the appropriate number of books into the Legal deposit.
Publishers upload the digital publications through this link, https://transfert-transfer.bac-lac.gc.ca/webclient/Login.xhtml. Once accepted, the materials are catalogued and recorded in Aurora, the national union catalogue. An official receipt is then sent via email to the author or to the publisher if the author is working with a publishing house such as PageMaster Publishing
